What kind of cider to buy?

There are a few main types of cider that you can find in the store that you can use in this margarita. Here is a breakdown and what we prefer:

  • Unfiltered vs. filtered: Apple cider is sold unfiltered, which contains the pulp and sediment, and filtered, which is basically like apple juice. For the best taste and color for this drink, choose unfiltered! But it also works with filtered.
  • Pasteurized vs. unpasteurized: Pasteurizing apple cider makes it more storage-stable. If it’s unpasteurized, it can turn into apple cider vinegar or apple cider vinegar over time, so you should drink it within 2 weeks. Unpasteurized cider carries a higher risk of bacteria, so we recommend pasteurized it.

How to make a cinnamon and sugar rim

The best thing about this cider margarita recipe? The cinnamon and sugar rim! It adds a touch of sweetness and a bit of texture to the edge of the glass to every sip. How to conjure it up at home:

  • Moisten the glass wedge with a wedge of lime. Cut a notch in it, then move around the edge of the glass. You can make a thicker tape as you see in the photos.
  • Mix a plate of cinnamon and sugar. You don’t even have to measure: any amount is sufficient.
  • Place the outer edge of the glass in the sugar and twist. Make sure that the outside edge is coated evenly (not the inside).

Voila! Take a sip and this drink is deliciously balanced between tangy lime, tangy tequila and sweet cinnamon sugar.

Make a cider margarita jug (8 servings)

Serve a crowd? The best way to serve a cider margarita is as a pitcher! That way, you can spend 5 minutes making 8 drinks instead of one. You can prepare all glasses with cinnamon and sugar rims and then pour the drink into each (approx. 2/3 cup of liquid per glass, plus ice cream!). Here’s what you should mix up:

  • 1 ½ cups of tequila
  • 2 cups of apple cider
  • ¾ Cup of Triple Sec or Cointreau
  • ¾ cup of lime juice
  • 3 handfuls of ice

Put these ingredients in a jug, mix and enjoy! The amount of ice is important to the dilution that would occur in a cocktail shaker. Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
