Here’s a healthy breakfast idea that’s a little unexpected but surprisingly satisfying…Cottage Cheese Breakfast Bowls! Sure, cottage cheese and pineapple or melon come across as a little retro. So let’s dust off the concept and start the day modern. Garnish this high protein cheese with fresh berries or apples, cinnamon and some honey. One bite and you’ll be won over (we promise).

Cottage Cheese Breakfast

Breakfast bowls with cottage cheese

Cottage cheese is great for breakfast because it’s low in calories and high in protein: to keep you full all day! Let’s be the first to explain: the whole cottage cheese and pineapple idea has never been our cup of tea. But garnish it with fresh berries or apples and cinnamon and it’s a whole new ball game. Promise! If you have a texture thing about cottage cheese, we get it. But we think you’ll be pleasantly surprised here! Here’s what to do:

  • Place ¾ cup cottage cheese in a bowl. All brands taste different, so find one you love. (We like the taste of the Daisy brand.)
  • Garnish with berries or diced apples. We used blueberries, raspberries and blackberries for the berry bowl shown here. For the apple cinnamon we used Pink Lady apples (our favorite variety!).
  • Add a pinch of chopped nuts. Go with pistachios for the berry zest and pecans for the apple.
  • Add a pinch of cinnamon and a dash of honey. Both ingredients are essential to enhance the flavors. You can use maple syrup if you prefer.

A healthy start to the day

Make a cottage cheese breakfast bowl and it’s both delicious and filling. A serving of ½ cup blueberries and 2 tablespoons chopped pistachios has:

  • 234 calories
  • 25 grams of protein

One thing to keep in mind about cottage cheese is the sodium: this recipe provides 30% of your daily sodium. This shouldn’t be a problem if you regularly prepare healthy, wholesome meals, but keep this in mind if you also eat a lot of salty foods throughout the day.
